Lark – Labrador – (M)

Teal

Lark is a 9-year-old Labrador currently being fostered in a family home in Gloucestershire with children and another dog.
Lark recently joined the Starfish family from working gundog kennels, where he had spent his entire life. We have been trying to help him for several years, so we are absolutely delighted that he is finally safe with us.
He is a gentle, quiet and unassuming boy who has clearly had a difficult life. At some point he suffered significant injuries to his ears, with parts of both ears having been torn, most likely during an attack by another dog. Despite everything he has been through, Lark has remained one of the kindest souls you could ever hope to meet.
He settled into foster care remarkably quickly. In those first few days he didn’t want to let his foster carer out of his sight, but as he has begun to feel safe, his confidence has slowly started to grow. He has been wonderful with the young boy in the home, although sudden movements can still frighten him. If someone moves too quickly, his instinct is to drop to the floor, so he needs people who are calm, gentle and willing to let him build trust in his own time.
One of Lark’s biggest milestones during his first week was choosing to lie in a dog bed. It may seem like such a small thing, but for a dog whose life has been kennels and straw, it was a huge step. He has clearly decided that soft beds are rather nice after all. He has also been enjoying walks with his foster family and gets on very well with the resident dog.
Lark is a true gentleman. He asks for very little, is beautifully mannered and is simply enjoying discovering all the comforts of family life that he has missed for so many years.
We feel Lark would be happiest in a quieter adult home, although he would be absolutely fine with sensible visiting grandchildren. He could happily live as an only dog or with another calm, gentle dog, with a steady female companion probably being his ideal match.
Although Lark is not a particularly complicated dog, everything about family life is new to him. He needs adopters who understand rescue dogs and are happy to let him continue taking those little baby steps as he discovers that the world can be a safe and kind place.
Lark sleeps well through the night and has quickly mastered house training.
He has been neutered, started his vaccinations, had a dental scale and polish, been treated for ear infections, and is up to date with his flea and worm treatments.
If you feel you could offer our lovely Lark the retirement he truly deserves, please email starfishdogrescue@hotmail.co.uk for an application form.
