Adopting a Dog
Facts to consider before adopting or applying for a dog …
We help different dogs from different circumstances.
Dogs, like people, react differently to how they have been treated, and it’s important for us to carry out detailed behaviour assessments on these dogs properly in our homes with our dogs, family members, out in public etc before we even think about matching them to potential families.
We will often update their progress daily on our Facebook Page with little videos, and will update their profile with more details after a week and then each week on our website.
During this period the dog will visit our vet for a Health Check and appointments made for any surgery needed, including neutering, dental treatment etc – this will also be updated to their profile.
We only help UK dogs. The dogs we mainly help are Council Pound dogs, ex-breeding Dogs, retired gundogs and local families who through different circumstances are no longer able to keep their pets and want their dogs to go to a foster home based rescue rather than kennels.
Our assessments are very detailed, and we expect people to take the time to read these profiles to see if they feel they are match so their, or our, time is not wasted.
As a rescue we not have blanket rules – it’s all about the individual dog.
Things to take into account before adopting …
The beginning of the process is filling out one of our application forms which tells us more about you as an individual and why you think you are a good match for a particular dog.
I know some people struggle with it being done on line, but please appreciate we are a completely voluntary organisation and many of us work etc, and it would just be too time consuming to take applications over the phone. Once you are accepted for one of our dogs then it’s done on a more personal basis.
If you are in rented accommodation you need to show us written proof of permission to own a dog, or dogs, from your landlord.
We home check all potential homes. This is done physically, not by video call – distance is not a problem as we have volunteers all over the country. Please note you will be expected to travel to meet the dog with any dogs you may have and family members where the majority are in Gloucestershire unless otherwise stated.
Once the home check is completed, you will be expected to travel within 7 days of this – so please do not apply for a dog if you have holidays booked in the next 6 weeks.
